Elect David Thoroughman

for Scioto County Sheriff

Experience - Leadership - Commitment

Safer - Stronger Communities

Safer - Stronger Communities

Scioto County needs to have a sheriff that has proven to be aggressive on crime and illegal drug activity.  When you look at my past, you will find that I have always been aggressive on crime and illegal drug activity while treating people fairly.  More importantly, we need to have a sheriff that will forge a strong partnership with the community that they serve.  In doing so we ensure success; we ensure a safer, stronger community.

When it comes to experience in actual law enforcement (and we are applying for the highest law enforcement position in the county) I have more than 8 times the “actual law enforcement experience” than the other candidate.  This experience entails responding to thousands and thousands of calls for service as well as directing officers under my command to those calls.  This experience has allowed me to have face to face interaction with victims, seeing the fear, frustration, and anger on their faces.  This has driven me to do all that I can for them.

Please do not misinterpret what I am saying. I have much respect for the job that the other candidate has had; however, my career path has given me much more meaningful experience as it relates to the position of sheriff.

I have been a chief of police (over 10 years total) of two law enforcement agencies, the Portsmouth Police Department and Shawnee State University’s Department of Public Safety.  The latter is a police department in which I had the pleasure of building from the ground up.  I have been responsible for the budgets of both agencies as well as the associated grants.  I have served on the Southern Ohio Drug Task Force on two occasions, once as a patrol officer and once as a sergeant.  Therefore, I have a great understanding of how to deal with the drug problem in our county.  I am honored to say that I am also the only candidate to be a military veteran.

During my law enforcement career, I have been trained as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and certified as a volunteer firefighter.  This experience, in addition to spending over three decades in law enforcement, gives me the unique skills that are necessary for the position of sheriff.  I can view each and every incident from the viewpoint of a law enforcement officer, an EMT, and a firefighter.  My education and my experience of being a victim of crime on multiple occasions has given me the necessary skills to view each incident from the viewpoint of a victim and to seek ways to improve community relations while reducing crime.  I am the only candidate with the extensive experience as well as the education to be your sheriff.

My Decision to Run for Sheriff

                                                                                  Safer, Stronger Communities

The decision to run for Sheriff was not easily made. I have a great job and work for and with wonderful people! The retirement and other benefits are great and to take the position of Sheriff would mean that I would lose these. However, worldly things are not what matters in life.

I was humbled by having so many people throughout the community approach me and ask me to run. The recurring theme was that we need safer communities for our families. As I stated earlier, I am humbled by their request to run and that they see in me the experience, leadership, and commitment necessary to make our community safer for our families. I truly love serving my country and community and have done so for most of my life in the U.S. Air Force and as a police officer.

My wife and I have had many, many discussions on the topic of me running for Sheriff. And, I have prayed many times asking for God’s guidance because I always want to do His will and not mine. During one of these prayers I was driving down the road asking for a sign, one that I could not misinterpret for my will. I looked up into the sky, praying “please Lord, show me” and I saw the “T” in the air which is the picture that I have attached. I’m not a smart man (lol) but even I thought that this sign was pretty clear.

Together we can build a SAFER, STRONGER community for our families!
